S.D. Marine Biological Research Institute
This institute has been established in 1966 at Sagar Island, Sundarbans, 24 Parganas (S), West Bengal, India. The institute is registered under West Bengal Societies Act. XXVI of 1961 and enjoys the recognition of a reputed NGO.
From the very beginning the institute has a glorious history of coastal marine environmental research activities in this part of India. The most important contribution of the institute has been that it helped to promote the marine, mangrove and Wetland Biodiversity and Ecosystem research in the country with multidisciplinary approach. In this aspect it enjoyed encouragement and support from national and international organizations including the UNESCO. The institute has intimate interactions with the Marine Science, Zoology, Botany and Geography dept. of the University of Calcutta, Zoological Survey of India, and Botanical Survey of India, World Wide Fund For nature, Calcutta Chapter, the MOEN and F and DST and DBT (Dept of Sc and Tech and Dept of Biotechnology).
SDMBRI is a constituent member institute of Sundarban Biosphere Reserve (Directorate of Forest, GOVWB) since its implementation by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEN and F), Govt. of India in 1989.
